During the hot summer mouths here in Texas, my usual go-to outfit are shorts and a shirt. So easy to wear and keeps me cool, right? Well at the beginning of the summer I told myself I would try to incorporate more dresses and skirts. Hopefully I would feel just as comfortable and cool as I did in shorts. And maybe look a little cuter too??
Plus I wanted something easy to sew up, like these Made By Rae dresses I made for the summer time too. I turned to my fabric stash and had this cool and funky spandex knit from Girl Charlee. I was thinking of using it for this Simplicity pattern but since I hadn't worked with spandex knit before I thought I would try it on something easier like a skirt. And so my pursuit began to find the right pattern.
After searching a little on Pinterest and the pattern books at Joann's I came across New Look 6381. I liked the idea of a gathered maxi skirt and the high low style seemed like it would work out with this fabric. For this pattern I decided to cut of view B in size 14.
Until I got home and started laying my pattern pieces out that I realized I did not have enough fabric. Oops! I decided I was going to have a "make it work" moment and I cut off five inches from the bottom of the pattern. I actually think this length worked out great. I feel like the original pattern would have been too long. I like that you can see a little leg, plus its cooler!
For the elastic waist band, I used a "non rolling" elastic which is very stiff and I don't think is ideal to use with a light weight fabric like this one. A regular elastic band would have been just fine. I used my serger for the side seems and a double needle for the bottom hem line. I have to be honest about this fabric though. While I absolutely love the ethnic style print of the fabric (you can get a closer look on a fabric haul here), the spandex was too slippery to sew with. Yes its nice and light weight fabric, great for a summer skirt. However I am not sure that I would work with this type of knit again. We'll see. Maybe I just need some more practice.
What do you do when when you don't have enough fabric for a pattern? Scrap it? Make it work?
